I'm doing some research which suggests that the origins of Buddhism may not have been in northern India or Nepal, but Central Asia, in the Gandharan Empire, from western Pakistan to the Silk Road in Kabul, Afghanistan. It was a crossroads of Indus, Greek, Iranian, Scythian, Turk and Chinese cultures. Might explain why it was so different from Vedic religions and so opposed to Brahmin caste system.
